If you’re looking for ways to incorporate your alma mater into your wedding day you’re going to love this Penn State University wedding! Matt and Gia had an elegant and wonderfully unique wedding at PSU with lots of fun ways of including their favorite university. Enjoy all the gorgeousness, photographed by Dyanna Joy Photography.
How they met: Matt and I were introduced when our mutual friend (later our best man) brought him to my 22nd birthday. We became friends and on New Years Eve 2006 we both realized we wanted to be more than just friends. We really balance each other out…He’s a CPA working for a large accounting and consulting firm, while I work as a non-fiction television producer. We share a big love of 80s music and movies (we pretty much had an ALL 80s music wedding–I even had a pianist and violinist play the love theme form St. Elmo’s Fire), love traveling to Disney together (we’ve been there 6 times together and went there on our honeymoon)–all of this was highlighted by our best man in his speech 🙂
Why they chose Penn State for their wedding: I went to Penn State and Matt went to Lehigh (but his dad went to Penn State so he grew up loving the school). I knew I wanted to get married at Penn State even before I met Matt! In college I would talk about how it would be amazing to get married at Beaver Stadium. I never knew it was a possibility but once I learned you could we were both hooked! I grew up in Long Island and New Jersey and Matt’s from the Lehigh Valley in Pennsylvania. We knew that where ever we got married someone would have to travel. For us, we wanted our wedding to be an experience for our guests and if we were going to make them go to State College, we knew it couldn’t be a “cookie cutter” wedding. Some of our family and friends were skeptical that we would get married in a football stadium, until they saw it with their own eyes. Matt and I love Penn State and Beaver Stadium was an obvious choice for us. I found vintage PSU football that I had on each table, we made our table numbers look like the were from a football jersey and made 3 football jerseys for people to sign (which were our wedding date). Our cake was make of all sprinkles, pom poms were passed out during dancing, and we even had 80s style scrunch socks with our names and wedding date for the ladies to wear while dancing. And to top it off we transported our guests to and from the hotel in PSU athletic buses.
Favorite moment from their Penn State University wedding: I think our favorite part of this venue was the view, especially when the sun was setting in the stadium. We saw beautiful views of Mt. Nittany (floor to ceiling windows) and then you walk into the stands it’s just an incredible feeling to be there when it’s empty!. People enjoyed sitting there and just reflecting. Another really amazing thing was having the concession stand as a bar–it just added to the feel! It was incredible being able to share a place we love with our loved ones and knowing that someday we can bring our kids back to PSU and show them where we were married. I look at our wedding pictures non-stop…they bring us back to the day and really captured the moments. Everything from the weekend went with the theme–from the Grilled sticky buns given to guests at check in to the PSU fight songs played at the wedding.
